Peach Research
The Melgar team has multiple projects which focus on peach tree physiology, to improve both tree performance and fruit quality for the southeastern peach industry. We also evaluates peach and nectarine cultivars annually at the Musser Fruit Research Center of Clemson University. Several of our current goals include:
1) optimize fertilizer regiments and mineral nutrients for fruit production
2) understanding annual nutrient movement within trees and orchards by different rootstocks, cultivars, abiotic stresses, and different soil conditions
3) improve irrigation practices and mitigate water stress
4) correlate phenotypic responses of freeze tolerance to genetic markers
5) understand the social, economic and physiological benefits of using fruit bags
